  Brief history: 

• The Browning-designed 1911 pistol was first tested in combat in Mexico in 1916. 
• During one legendary engagement Sergeant Alvin York used a Model 1911 pistol to stop an attack by six German soldiers with as many shots, in the process winning the Medal of Honor. 
• The post-WWI era saw subtle refinements to the basic Model 1911 design including the addition of improved sights, an arched mainspring housing, shorter trigger, longer grip safety spur and other ergonomic improvements. 
• Collectively these improvements were completed in 1924 and resulted in the Model 1911A1.
• Total military production of the Model 1911 was nearly 3 million pistols during WWII
• While the Modern Technique is adaptable to most handguns, the ideal instrument to exploit its full effectiveness is the .45 ACP Model 1911 – a pistol with the power, accuracy and reliability to prevail in a confrontation. 
• Two more Medals of Honor were awarded in 1993 to US Delta Force operators, Master Sergeant Gary Gordon and Sergeant First Class Randall Shughart, for their actions in Somalia, which were later immortalized in the book and motion picture “Black Hawk Down.” After Shughart was fatally wounded, Gordon continued his fight to the death using a 1911 to protect one of the wounded helicopter pilots.

How S&W changed the 1911: 

As of this year, Smith & Wesson has discontinued all previous versions of its existing SW1911s, except for three SKUs that will remain cataloged to meet California's legal requirements. The rest of the original-generation SW1911s will now be replaced by the E-Series, which will initially be available in four basic models.

The entry-level Model SW1911 full-size five inch will be offered in stainless steel only at an MSRP of $924. The full-size stainless Model SW1911CT will include a Crimson Trace LaserGrip and is priced at $1,085. The full-size Model SW1911TA (Tactical Accessory) will include an integrated 1913-spec Picatinny rail, with your choice of all-stainless or black Melonite finish, both costing $1,324. The Commander-size Model SW1911SC (Scandium Carry) features a 41/4-inch barrel; lightweight, round-butt, black Scandium-alloy frame; and choice of black Melonite stainless slide or two-tone with black frame and natural matte stainless slide. Both finishes go for $1,372.

The sights on the SW1911 and SW1911CT have white dots; the SW1911TA and SW1911SC have tritium night sights. Full-size E-Series pistols come with two eight-round magazines with buttpads. The more compact SW1911SC comes with one seven-round flush-fit magazine and one eight-round magazine with buttpad.

and finally. the gun I will be obtaining some time before August for home defense and recreation. Though I am under 21, in FL I can still own and posses a weapon on my property, I just can't purchase it.  Fun fact: gun licensing is not required in FL. However a C&C license does require a person to be 21, so I'll have to wait a few more months for that.

Future Weapons

In recognition of the news of Osama Bin Laden's death, I bring you a unique weapon being used in the conflict in the East. The Army is field testing the "Punisher" in limited numbers right now. The fancy targeting system guides the 25mm burst rounds to their targets, which then penetrates barriers to explode behind enemy combatants. DefenseTech states the Army just signed a $65 million check to ATK for a bunch of XM-25s at an estimated price of $25,000 each.
